The US Founding Fathers were well-experienced in the inconveniences of religious tyranny, and took care to prevent such tyranny from getting a foothold in their newborn democracy.

Almost as soon as the ink dried on the US Constitution, however, the armies of God were hard at work looking for loopholes. Today’s common refrain is that the founders were in fact pious Christians who founded a nation under Christianity and biblical rule. (Not!)
